5 Tips on caring for your scalp.

Raise your hand if you pay more attention to your hair than your scalp? I meannnnnn… of course, we are paying more attention to our hair! Hair is a lot more pleasing to look at, has more personality, is a lot more fun, not to mention requires more maintenance due to changes in the environment, weather, lifestyle, etc. Hair is more susceptible to damage due to its exposure and is the first thing that we see and learn about so we have every reason to direct more of our energy to the health of our hair.

With all of this in mind, we want to remind you that the foundation of healthy hair is a healthy scalp. Healthy hair is about sustainability and in order to maintain healthy strands is to have a healthy scalp.

Although the scalp has 5 layers we have access to the outermost layer which is the skin surface. Beneath that surface are sebum, the hair follicle, and the sebaceous gland. It contains numerous follicles and sebaceous glands and is also where hair grows.

Ways to maintain a healthy scalp for longevity:

  1. Use gentle hair care products - avoid harsh sulfates and alcohol. They strip away natural oils in your hair and remove dead skin cells that can be helpful to our scalp. Sulfates can lead to dry scalp and irritation.

  2. Avoid tightness on the scalp - Protective styles like braids, twists, locs, ponytails, tight bands around your head, and anything that pulls the hair tightly can cause abrasions on the scalp that can lead to permanent damage.

  3. Wash less often - If you wash your hair often you may be experiencing a dry scalp. Washing your hair too often can strip away natural oils resulting in your scalp over-producing oils that will leave you oily but dry.

  4. Massage your scalp- According to research, scalp massages increase hairs thickness by stretching the cells of the hair follicle which stimulates the follicles to produce thicker hair. Scalp massage helps dilate blood vessels beneath the skin, encouraging hair growth.

  5. Massage with oil - you already know what to do! Check out our Scalp Therapy treatment oil.

Just like the rest of the skin on our body aging of the scalp will eventually happen over time as the scalp's cell regeneration diminishes, becoming thinner and loses its ability to retain moisture and distribute the follicle. But, if you are prioritizing the health of your scalp by giving it time and attention then you can delay that process.
